• tell them straight. tell them about something they’ve done for you in your life and how it made a considerable, positive difference for you
• do something little, but thoughtful for them. for example, if they’re your mum, do some unexpected cleaning for her!
• tell them that you’re there for them, that you will sit and listen for as long as they need and you’ll always help if they need you to
• invite them to do something you know they’ve always wanted to do (that will please them even more that you listen to them!)
• encourage them to try something you know they want to try - go on, inspire them!
• do something they’ve encouraged you to do - another thing to show them you listen and value their opinion
• offer to do something for them you know they don’t like doing, like taking out the trash, or hoovering
• look them straight in the eye, and tell them they make the world a better place
